Roots of Wisdom by David Rayfield

The Roots of Wisdom is a contemplative art installation by Hamilton-based artist David Rayfield that explores the deeply personal experience of end-of-life decision-making.

Rooted in research on values, goals, and the meaning of a “good death,” the installation invites reflection on dignity, autonomy, and connection at life’s final stages.

Trees are powerful symbols of transformation, wisdom, and the cycle of life across cultures, religions, and philosophies. Tree saplings, in particular, represent the promise of new life and the potential for growth and knowledge.

This interactive art installation invites patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, researchers, and the public to partake in a reciprocal gesture of sharing knowledge and experience to both capture and present how values, goals, and meaning drive end-of-life decision-making. This is the first of a two-phase project combining academic research with creative expression.

Just as a sapling grows through the sunlight, water, and soil that nurture it, so will this sapling grow into a mighty tree replete with foliage, fruit, and flowers from the care and nourishment you provide it. This installation will tour public, healthcare, and art spaces, then return home fully grown in 2026.

This installation is funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Grant.

This project is part of a three-phase pilot research-creation approach aimed at bridging social science, healthcare research, and public engagement.
